it's taken me a while to get around to it, but here are some pictures of the various creatures we encountered on our travels.
We paid a visit to an elephant orphanage and saw the babies being bottlefed. We were allowed to try ourselves - we were the only two tourists who were given the opportunity, so we're probably now on dozens of videos and snapshots taken by complete strangers! (That's Jen in the picture)
Coming away from the Elephant Orphanage, we encountered some snakes. Fortunately we never saw any of them in the wild.
There were monkeys everywhere! These ones were checking each other over for fleas!
We also visited a turtle hatchery and got the chance to examine some 2 day old turtles close up. That's me in this picture.
We saw water monitors and iguanas, but didn't get any pictures of them. The best we could manage was a chameleon.
Bullock carts are still a common sight. They're versatile animals. I got into the habit of having bullock curd for breakfast every morning. It's not unlike yoghurt.
A lot of elephants in Sri Lanka work for a living. Some of them are used on safari. The elephant quickly realised Jen had some bananas. If you look closely, you can see her giving them to him.
We actually went a lot deeper than this. At one point I had to lift my feet up or I'd have been paddling.
This is one of my favourite pictures. We'd stopped for a tea break. Behind us is a working elephant, totally relaxed and in absolute bliss as his handler gives him a bath. That's Sunny with Jen. He was with us on all our tours.
