We were based in Colombo at the Galle Face Hotel, where we were looked after extremely well. When we were by the pool, Devi, in the blue sari and Gunny were always on hand.
We explored a fair bit of Colombo on foot, including Pettah, the bazaar district.
There are hundreds of roadside stalls selling all kinds of fruit and vegetables. We stopped at this one to buy cashew nuts.
Being British, we needed frequent tea breaks and stopped at rest houses like this.
This was the view from our table at a hotel we stopped at for another tea break.
Course, we were in the right country for tea. Tea pickers were a very common sight up country.
They grow their own rice in Sri Lanka too. I had a view of paddy fields from the balcony of the hotel room on one tour.
The coastline is superb. And the water is much warmer than the North Sea! We were on a lunch break here and passing the time while our food was being prepared by having a paddle.
It wasn't all relaxing though. This is Sigiriya Rock. You can actually climb to the very top if you're feeling courageous and don't suffer from vertigo. Some of the ladders are virtually perpendicular and not the most robust things you've ever seen. We still made it about two thirds of the way up though.
Don't know what the Health authorities would have to say if this went on in the UK, but it's how they dry fish in Sri Lanka.
