Joan was extremely lucky with the weather, we had lots of sunshine all weekend and only the occasional shower. She managed to drag me away from the Olympics for long enough on Sunday, for us to spend the afternoon at Tynemouth. Tynemouth has a big Victorian station which is taken over by antique and craft stalls every weekend, so we started by having a look around there. Afterwards, we headed for the sea front, which is never far away. It's a long time since I've been out on the pier, but it was such a nice day, it made a pleasant walk. This is a view of Tynemouth from the pier. There are sandy beaches in the coves you can see. It's also a popular place for surfers, although there weren't any out on Sunday. This is the view from the end of the pier. It felt a lot longer than it appears in this pic! As luck would have it, a Danish sailing ship was heading into the Tyne, just as we reached the end of the pier, so we got a great view of it. In the first shot, the ship is just heading for the harbour. In the second, she's just entered the Tyne.

Great pictures, Ann - most of what's round here is traffic and grotty buildings, so it's lovely to see something more relaxing! Lesley T xx

p.s. isn't that ship lovely Yes, it was just a pity the sails were all furled. Imagine what it would have looked like in full sail. The sea had quite a heavy swell judging by the way it was rolling. I was very glad I was watching it from dry land rather than being on board!

Tynemouth looks lovely. I'd like a bit of a hunt around the craft stalls!

Antique/craft fairs, dangerous places, at least for my bank balance! What a fabulous picture Ann of the ship, reminded me of the 'Onedin line' (now I'm showing my age ).

Great pics, Ann!
I too was glued to the Olympics. What were your favorite events? Who did you like best?
I liked Michael Phelps (a cat person!), Carly Patterson (has a cat named Beijing-a Meezer maybe?), Hicham El Gerrouj, Fani Halkia (Greek 400m hurdles champion), and both marathons.

Edda,
I like watching almost any kind of race and anything remotely gymnastic when it comes to the Olympics.
The person I most wanted to win a gold was Matthew Pinsent, because despite winning 3 consecutive golds in previous Olympics, he's always been in the shadow of Steve Redgrave. I was also delighted to see Kelly Holmes win double gold in the 800 and 1500 metres. I've followed athletics for more years than I care to remember and was aware of all the many injury and illness problems she's had in the past and which have always affected her performance at major track events. I missed seeing the 1500m live unfortunately, but could be heard quite literally screaming her home in the 800m.
Like you, I was also delighted for Hicham El Gerrouj. I was also pleased the Brazilian runner who got ambushed in the Marathon finished up with a medal.

Ann,
A big congrats to Kelly Holmes! That was awesome! I too, was happy for the Brazilian runner when he won his bronze medal. Poor guy! That was one scary experience he went through! I also liked Stefano Baldini of Italy, the gold medalist. In 1896, a Greek, Spiridon Louis won. In 2004, it was an Italian. The title is still in the Mediterranean family. Both runners' first names also began with "S."

I know this post is MANY months later ...but seeing those pics of Tynemouth Market and the seafront at Tynemouth makes me feel all homesick LOL We used to live a couple of miles inland and religiously went to Tynemouth Market EVERY Sunday before going anywhere else! One stall used to do books to raise money for charity and she knew I was cat-mad so kept any feline-themed books under the table for me until I had been! Had QUITE a few good bargain from her over the years! We should be moving back down that way in the next 6-8 weeks so I can't wait to get back into the Sunday Routine once more! ;D Gill

Gill,
One of the nice things about having new members is when they start looking back on Boards and "old" posts suddenly appear again and get a new life.
Feel free to add comments to any posts on any Board, no matter how old they are.
By the way, which book stall was it? I thought I knew most of them, but can't think of one run by a lady. Did you know the first bookfair of the season is on 17th April? If you like secondhand books, you're in good company here! Several of us are collectors.

Oh don't worry...I have the dates of the book fairs pencilled into my diary as soon as they are announced Last April I spent about £75 which isn't TOO bad for me All depends wether I find any cat/dog books and how much the traders want. Since I dicovered Abe Books I seem to have sussed out how much certain favourite authors are going for and I refuse to pay over the odds! But, on the other hand, if I find a book - Doreen Tovey, for example - who's books are scarce and rather pricey on a stall at just a couple of quid I have to be really casual about it and try not to show just HOW excited I am LOL Once picked up a copy of Doreen's book 'The Coming Of Saska' in a charity shop in North Shields for 25p!!!!!!!! ;D THAT had me as high as a kite for the rest of the day!!! LOL Can't remember who the charity stall is in aid of but it's on the same side as the King's School, just to the right as you come through the archway, next to Garibaldi restaurant (think I have the name right?). She was only ever there on a Sunday and I hope she still goes. I haven't been to Tynemouth Market on Sunday for a few months now...last two visits have been on Saturday. But finances permitting I plan to get down next Sunday for the book fair.....now that I can drive Neil won't see how many books I am loading into the boot! LOL Gill

Linda will be green with envy, I know she's looking for a copy of "The Coming of Saska"!
I'll be at the Book Fair on Sunday afternoon. I don't usually spend a long time there, but I like to have a look around and I know a couple of the sellers, so it's nice to catch up with them.

Can't decide wether to pop along to the Book Fair ....cash is a bit tight but you know how it is...if I DON'T go there'll be a stall selling bargain-priced copies of Doreen Tovey books!!! ...I have five of her books, just the commoner titles, and am working towards getting them all eventually as they are so funny! Keep telling Neil to read them but not sure if I should let him...when he finds out just how naughty Siamese can be he'll ban me from having any LOL *like HE'LL ever stop ME doing what I want LOL* Gill

Linda will be green with envy, I know she's looking for a copy of "The Coming of Saska"! Has she tried Ebay? I went on, just to look and see what all the fuss was about,a few weeks ago and somebody was selling a few of Doreen's books for about a fiver each! Unfortunately I couldn't put in a bid because I don't have a credit card!!! I'm rather old-fashioned....only deal in cash!!!! Perhaps once I'm working again I''ll go and see if the bank will let me have a credit card...seems to be a part of life these days and not having one seems to be a rarity The one Dorren book I've been hunting for EVERYWHERE is her latest one, printed in 2001 and now out of print , called Cats In Concord....can't find it anywhere!!!! But I'm patient...it'll turn up sooner or later The REALLY frustrating part is that I once found an article on the net about the book and it gave you the first six pages....well, I was just getting stuck in and really enjoying the story....AND THEN IT RAN OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Talk about mental torture!!!!!! Oh well...just have to keep looking LOL Gill
