What kind of names do you like cats to have? I've often mused on this topic but have never brought it up before.

As well as human names, I like them long with plenty of syllables. Hence Alexander. When he came to me as a kitten, it was a toss up between that and Dominic, but after a few days it was clear that Alexander was the name that suited him.

Whenever we have had a new kitten we have always pondered long and hard about which name to give it, making long lists, consulting with friends and family, and finally narrowing it down to the final choice. So far we have had: Splodge - because of her funny black and white markings. Sprog - not very complimentary but it did seem to suit him! And I can't quite remember how it came about... Toffee - because his brother was Fudge and we wanted to keep to a 'sweet' theme. Jaffa - because she had 'orange' points. Shadow - best described the way she looked - a little dark shadow. Astra - our first Siamese, a lilac-point. We thought she looked ethereal and she was a little 'star' - and still is! Jethro - named after a guy we used to know, and perhaps also after Jethro Tull! Rosco - after 'Emperor Rosco' the radio DJ. Elsa - I just love that name! Faro - after a Siamese cat in a novel I read in which the cat was described as 'lying curled up like a shrimp' and our Faro's points seemed to be shrimp coloured when he was a kitten!!! And lastly Jacob, whom we got to help fill the gap Jeddy left when he was put to sleep. 'Jacob' means 'to fill the place of another'.

With the exception of Tabitha, Leonardo, and Julius, who came to me already named, I usually just wait for the cats to tell me who they are.
The kittens, when they were truly kittens, went by the color of food dye stripes they had on their heads: one stripe red, two stripe blue, etc. (I only had red, blue, and green dye and limited it to two stripes; the seventh kitten did have three blue stripes. The problem with striping kitten heads, however, is that they and their mother lick it off, so you have to keep striping them.
After Ching died and before I had so many Siamese, I adopted a grey and white cat from the local SPCA. It was weeks before he told me who he was (probably because he wanted to make certain he was really home). He told me his name as I was driving down the road, even though he was at home--the name suddenly popped into my head while I was thinking about him--his name was Simon and he was a wonderful cat who loved the kittens and died too soon of a disease he had picked up while on the streets (I lost one of the kittens to the same disease sadly enough, but fortunately every one else was fine.) Simon loved to give hugs, he would wrap his arms around my neck, put his head on my shoulder or chest, and just purr away.
The names of the 12 I live with now are (in order of age): Julius, Mumbles, Tabitha, Schuster, Precious; the kittens: Chessie, Minga, Keiki (Hawaiian for baby--and she is), Buster, Higgins, and Sebastian, and the latest addition, Leonardo, who's only 8, so the youngster of the bunch.
