This is a true story! A cat that never went outside alone, ran out the door when guests came to visit. The owner called and went looking, but the cat didn't come home. Next day she called the Shelter, Vets and radio station, she also put pictures everywhere. After the cat had been gone for five days and the owner was thinking how he would get along(if he was still alive) without the comforts of home . Then she had an idea and put his litter box out on the patio. During the night she got up and went to look out, there was her cat in the litter box. She couldn't believe it. Next day she called all the places to let them know the cat was home safe and sound. When she called the Vet and told him the story, he said Yes, he knew that, a cat can smell his own litter for a mile! She asked him why he didn't tell her that five days ago! He had no answer .I wish I had known it when I lost one of my cats, long ago, but I found him safe anyway.

I had no idea cats putting their litter box outside would help cats to find their way home. That's definitely one to remember.
I always seem to live with cats who make very sure they know their way back home. I think they know a sucker when they see one. But it's always a worry in the back of the mind with outdoor cats.

The only thing with outdoor cats is-- most don't use litter. All my cats are in and only Muffin goes out, on fine days for a little while, and that's in the fenced yard. (she is the only one that doesn't try to get over the fence)
