I know that a number of members have connections with charities, so I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread where they could tell us about them.
If you've visited Catsup, you'll know that I'm a registered volunteer with PDSA. In fact Catsup first saw the light of day as a means of raising awareness of and funds for PDSA. For overseas visitors who may not have heard of them, PDSA is Britain's largest veterinary charity. It treats, free of charge, the sick and injured pets of owners who live on certain means tested benefits.
I'm also a trustee of Design Aid, a small charity which does low cost graphic design work for other charities. If they want to compete for funds, even the smallest charities need to have things like logos, properly designed letterheads, leaflets etc. We can help them to achieve a professional image without them having to use any more of their hard won funds than necessary.
Now what about everyone else?

Well, as I mentioned elsewhere, I volunteer for Siamese Rescue Metro, a Siamese Rescue that helps Siamese in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware find good homes. Primarily, I do their web site, and go to cat shows. I also volunteer for Meezer Express out of Siamese Rescue of Virginia, driving siamese cats to their forever homes. My longest drive was from the Philadelphia suburbs, across PA to just outside Pittsburg, then south to Locust Dale, VA (between Charlottesville and Washington), then back home--with a broken foot. One thing for which I will be recalled in the Rescue community, is the time I obtained 31,000 lbs of scoopable litter as a donation. It was free and they even delivered it in an 18-wheeler tractor trailer for free! Needless to say, litter is not on the wish list! It took up almost all of a two-car garage that one of our volunteers offered to house it in. In fact, we're still using the litter and may do so for some time t.o come
I also recently started volunteering with the American Red Cross. I had planned to do it last spring, but broke my foot, and before it healed, September 11 happened, so it took longer than I planned to become active with them.
In years past, I have volunteered as a docent for the Philadelphia Zoo and as a bird care assistant taking care of sick and injured wild birds for Tri-State Bird Rescue in Newark, DE. My greatest experience there was helping eagles fly and holding an eagle's head while it was tubed. I combined my love of birds and cats at the zoo by giving a presentation showing how cats and raptors are alike.

CAT REGISTER AND RESCUE You will have probably read a bit about the charity already in previous posts. Both Chalmers Cats (Rita and Lisa) and Mucklette (Jan) are involved in the charity.  I worked for 15 years at our local Cats protection League cattery full time as well as fundraiser,homeing officer and commitee member. These days(i work full time)i just do fundraising and help out re-homing for Rex-Rehome(nationwide)for the Rex Cat Association. I also sponsor Lulu a permanant Seal-Point siamese at Siamese welfare. Then theres my Comfort cats,for which i am Uk-co-Ordinator,i vet cats up and down the country and organise where they visit,i also visit Hospitals and nursing homes with my own Devon Rex cat Elphin. All of this is at my website. This all keeps me busy and out of mischeif,but little time to visit here im afraid. Keep up the good work your doing girls. Jayne

Sorry if this is inapropraiate on a charity thread, but I just can't help the imagry... Everytime I hear the words 'Cat Protection League' I imagine a couple of large toms knocking on doors and saying: 'Give us a couple of tins of tuna a week.... or the garden gnome gets it....' 8) I think I'm spending too much time wrapped up in cat fiction I don't have a personal charity I'm involved with anymore, I got pretty badly burnt by a couple a few years ago. But I'm hoping eventualy to tie some of my own stuff in with the odd one or two if things work out the way I want. (ie would happily donate a small cut of any prints of say a jaguar painting to a charity involved in their conservation) |

As I work full time and study, I'm not that involved in any charities at the moment, except in a supporting mode.
I support my local 'Cat's Protection' shelter and attend all their open days. (I always stop to look at the pen that my cats were in when i first met them). They are always grateful for some cans of cat food, old blankets, cat baskets etc. I have to be careful not to be tempted to come home with a cat in my pocket though!
I also support the Hospice movement and any fundraising drives that my local Hospice does. It is a very worthy cause. The care that a hospice can provide for the terminally ill and their families is so valuable. Most of their funds have to come from fundraising, so they need all the help they can get.

I volunteer for Virginia Siamese Cat Rescue. I agree always room for humor Ann. That was cute! I adopted my Sasha from them and got hooked.

I know it was posted some time ago but I have just read it (the toms and tuna racketeers) and it made me laugh. When you are heavily involved in a charity I think you need someone else to pitch in with something like that now and then to remind you to lighten up. "The Garden Gnome gets it" -- LOL -- thanks for that. My "pet" charity is of course the Cat Register and Rescue, which enables me to look after lots of delightful fuzzy-faced people. And although rescuing animals is a serious business with its sadnesses and worries, and must be extremely painful when you're at the cutting edge as Jan and Rita are, as a foster-mum I get lots of joy and it's hard not to laugh at the antics and individual quirks of the cats. As I write this, Katie is lying on the top of my monitor, Cinders is on my lap trying to catch my fingers, and Bog Sooty is chasing the other two "babies" through the house and back again with a sound like thunder.

There is an organization here on the Central Coast of California called "Catalyst for Cats," which works on behalf of feral cats. We have ferals of our own, and the people at Catalyst do wonderful work for ferals.

It's the Peoples' Animal Rescue & Rehoming Team (PARRT) for Neil and myself as we've been long-term fosterers for the old and abused cats since August 2010 During the summer months I also help man the fundraising stalls at various agricultural shows and country shows - Warkworth Show, Low Hauxley Open Day etc and it's great fun ;D |

Along with Cat Register and Rescue in Falkirk, I now support Feline Friends which is much more local.
Towards the end of last year I was contacted by Georgina, a young Arts student in London. A couple of weeks ago she and a friend visited Sue, who specialises in looking after pregnant queens and kittens for Feline Friends. (She has cats of her own and fosters other adults too.) Georgina has been given funding to make a short documentary film about the work of Feline Friends, which will count towards her degree. We're hoping it'll go ahead in March.

That sounds good Ann, We are still involved in the Walthamstow Cat & Kitten rescue an East London based charity. Last month at the table top sale they raised over £1000.00 to help the fund, they do these every couple of months When I can I supply potted garden plant for them to sell, I never take anything on costs so I know it is 100% profit for them, I even put the lables growing conditions & prices on the pots  The other thing I help with is checking the jewelry for gold and silver items as the ladies have trouble spotting these. |
