I just went to a small animal shelter today and adpoted a very skinny, three-tooth neglected six year old meezer kitty.
He and 6 kittens were taken from a home where a lady who was too ill to take care of herself let alone 7 cats was also taken to a shelter for humans. The kittens were adopted immediately but poor old Simon had to be shipped to a second shelter wherer they extracted all but three teeth due to peridontal disease.
I read about him in a newsletter and thought back to a year ago when I adopted Gracie from the Humane Society and a more wretched looking creature I never did see. Now Gracie is healthy and beautiful. I am hoping that Simon, who has taken residency under my bed, will respond as well as she did to a bit of TLC.
He may never be as beautiful as Gracie but when he is not frightened he has a very winning personality. He was a little clown at the shelter making everyone laugh and fall in love with him.
He may always be a bit on the homely side, but I think personality wins over looks as a more desirable trait anyway. I just want him to be a happy kitty.

I agree with you although by the time he's been with you for a while, I'm quite sure he'll be a sleek and handsome boy in your eyes. I'm so pleased you took him, it's nice to think that the rest of his life will be a happy one after the rough years at the start of it. Ann

It is always nice to hear a happy ending, to a story with sad beginnings. Simon doesn't know it yet, but he is indeed fortunate to have found Gracie and you. I am sure in time, that you and Gracie will be rewarded with yet another loving feline companion, and someday, you will look back and wonder what life was like before Simon. Bobbie

Second day. Simon is living in my bedroom so I am sleeping in the living room and since I am in the "separate the kitties" phase of their introduction. I even moved my computer out into the living room so I could keep the door closed to the bedroom so Simon could feel safe. Gracie doesn't care if the door is closed as long as I am on her side of it.
Simon is pretty much frightened of everything but when I sit on the floor and coax him he will let me pet him. Gracie could care less now, but unfortunately she was there when I let him out of the carrier yesterday, he went over to her and touched noses and she hissed. He took off for the hills at that point. Well, my bedroom closet.
Gracie usually doesn't do that but Simon smelled of medicine and veterinarians and other kitties so I think she become confused. I am hoping Simon will soon get the courage to come out and deal with Gracie. Right now she is interested in the new boy kitty across the courtyard. They sit in their respective windows and stare at each other with great interest.
My friend David says. "Just like a woman, always wants the man farthest from her."
H'mmmm. What do we say to that, ladies?

Keep sending the updates Vicki.
Gracie sounds like quite a one for the boys, so once Simon loses the medicinal/vet smell hopefully she'll take a bit more interest. In the meantime, I'm sure he's getting lots of careful attention from you. Knowing that you're gaining his trust must be a great feeling.

Congratulations on your new kitty! It seems like Simon has found some excellent humans to care for him! My cats were a lot younger when I adopted them, but they had been through a tough time and it took them a while to be able to trust us and feel safe. (They spent the first two weeks behind the sofa.) Now they are happy and contented as any cats could be, and I have no doubt that Simon will be the same.
I would love to see some pictures and do keep us updated about Simon's progress.

My very first meezer Heidi who came to live with me in the 70's spent the first two weeks in my home on the top shelf of my coat closet. Gracie spent the first few days under my couch. Amanda on the other hand was all over the place from the get-go as was her buddy Ivan who took to her immediately.
Simon is happiest under my bed but he has the entire bedroom to himself with the door closed. He is getting more and more friendly towards me as I come into the room. Of course, I'm never empty handed. I offer him chicken or baby food or cat food. I would like him to think of me and food together. That will win his heart I'm sure.
I am hoping in a few days he will want to come out and be with me as he is basically a very social kitty. I'm hoping Gracie will behave herself. Neither is very agressive and I think they will be friends in time.

The vet smell seems to make even the best of cat friends suspicious of each other. In a short while Gracie and Simon will probably be the best of friends and she will give him confidence. Good luck with him, he is lucky to have found a loving home and someone willing to be patient and put the time in to making him into a friendly cat.
