I took the digital camera with me when I went out today. After I'd done my shopping, I went off to St Mary's Lighthouse. This was taken from a spot on the links. Getting closer! At the start of the causeway. A real closeup. Note the cannon at the entrance. Just in case of pirates. Outside the shelter of my front patio, I can tell you it was very chilly, despite the blue skies. Ann

ann, great photos. nice of you to brave the "cool" weather. st.mary's looks like a popular spot. really lovely. the photo of 'at the start of the causeway' looks like the area was at some point covered with water; or does the area still get covered?
i know there are (obviously) lighthouses on the west coast; i'll have to post some when i find them. lesley

The causeway is completely covered twice a day at high tide and St Mary's island is cut off from the mainland for a few hours.
Some years ago, a friend was staying with me and we went across to the island one afternoon. We left our return a little too late for comfort and had to paddle back through a foot of sea. Luckily we were both wearing wellingtons although Angela discovered hers weren't watertight and poured about a pint of water out of each one when we got back onto dry land.
My cousin happened to be on the links with his Mum that afternoon and they were laughing at the two idiots who'd got caught by the tide, completely unaware that, not only did they know them, but they were actually related to one of them!

PS I think the word I was looking for earlier to describe the weather was probably "bracing", but I was well wrapped up.

Aaahhh....now you're making this especially tempting, aren't you...? We can't wait to see it...but...uuummm...perhaps we'll wait for a little warmer weather.... ..? Thank you, Ann - that was kind of you to "venture out into the storm" to snap these for us....! Miles

Miles,
After all the snow in New Hampshire, Whitley Bay will be a doddle! And you'll get used to the strong winds in no time. Trust me!

At the moment, I am staying with Ann for a few days. The weather was wonderful so we took a stroll down to the beach and walked all the way to the lighthouse! We walked all the way to the top-all 137 steps! At the end you could buy a certificate. So just to make you even more jealous, we scanned it into the computer for you to look at. Lisa
