I thought you might like to see this picture, which was taken in the lovely village of Abbotsbury in Dorset, England. This is how people in this part of the country sell their wares! They leave a basket or table outside their house with a price list, a sign and a tin for the money. You wouldn't get that where I live!! Anything from sweet peas, to Duck eggs to home-made walking sticks was on sale! It's lovely to see. Maria

That's amazing! How wonderful that there's still places where trust and honesty exist. Hereabouts I'm sure there'd always be some bright spark who'd walk off with the money.

I live approx. two miles from Abbotsbury and am really miffed that I've never noticed this!!!
However, I have sold runner beans out the front of my own house this summer, in the same way, and everyone has been very honest and left the right money!!! My neighbour sells all sorts of fruit, veg and flowers on a little stall attached to his garden wall and he does a roaring trade too!

lovely photo. canadaland (especially this area or as they say 'this neck of the woods') still has lots of road side stalls - we were out driving around the back roads yesterday (trying to drive the kids into oblivion), saw quite a few flower stands. funny though i've lived in a few larger cities (incl.toronto) NO such thing there! someone would take the produce/stand - sign ha anything! nice to see trust in some places though.

interesting photo though - it would be a 'neat' photo project to do a series of 'roadside stands' throughout the world.

On the opposite side of the coin, I was doing up a flat in a town about 4 miles from here a few years ago. It's an old property with a front door opening straight onto the street and a back yard with a lane behind. The locals are, to put it nicely, "alive to the main chance". I found one of the advantages was that I never needed to ask the council to come and remove any junk. I just put it in the back lane and within a day or two it had mysteriously vanished!

Lesley...hmmm, now there's an idea!! Your project idea would also provide a fabulous excuse for some travelling!
Catnip - Now I'm the one that's miffed! Two miles you say??? I was sooooo close to a nice cup of tea and slice of your Dorset Apple Cake!
Ann - that happens here too. The best example was when some neighbours left a sofa outside the front of their house, intending to call the council to collect it the next day. It went in the night! Little did the chancers know that the sofa was infested with dog fleas!
