Here is a recent photograph taken from the car of the old vernacular railway/lift in Hastings, which is a seaside town in Sussex. (You may have heard of the the place...there was a famous battle nearby...in 1066...) It's not as high as some, but I think it is the steepest in England and takes people up to the East Cliffs, in the Old Town. It certainly has the ability to make the hairs on the back of the neck stand up somewhat! I thought people might like to see this, but especially Jayne, who lives in the lovely town of Hastings! what a great shot. the railway lift reminds me of the one they used to have at niagara falls; to bring the tourists down to the 'maid of the mist' boats. the ones that take you almost under 'the falls'. however, they of course took out the exciting railway lift and put in boring elevators (lifts) and stairs. how sad.
england has such a diverse landscape. i really do hope to see it someday.
