I've got the 1893/94 Girl's Own Paper in pieces at the moment. It's going to be a challenge repairing and putting it back together again! But guess what? It's got Puzzle Pictures in it and they're much easier to scan when the books in pieces. So here's the first. ............. Spring .................. I Ye ................ doves .............. their cover Ye sun glints on the hollow And scents of flowers ................ to follow Ye steps of ...................... will soon ............... II Be here to gladden those who wait Surrounding the cottage hover But most of all her long .... ................................. over the gate III Lo here she comes, so hush our cries, See halos round her tresses. ...................... breath of heaven my loved bless For foxgloves .................................. IV Oh .................flower................... Nearest to angels in creation. High on heaven with it's --tation Salute and hymns my ....................... I'm working through this volume repairing each section and I've just come to the one with the solution. Now I know why we've been having trouble with it! Reading between the lines of the Examiner's Report, I think this is one competition with which even the Victorian "girls" struggled. They've actually published an explanation, which I've never seen before. I've scanned it in and here it is.

I think this is going to be another stinker. Apart from anything else, the print is much smaller than usual. It's actually blown up in the pic and clearer than looking at it on the actual page.
I have no idea what the title is - the figure seems to be on a spring!

I've put our combined efforts together and we've made quite a dent in it already.

It's an odd one isn't it. It would help if we could get the title as I haven't really a clue what I'm working towards yet. It was in the edition which came out on 28th Oct 1893 but I don't know if that's relevant.
Thanks to your "wait" and "gate" Kaye, I managed "hollow" and "follow" in verse one, so it's looking as though the rhyme scheme is 1/4 and 2/3.

Look I know this sounds strange and I have been thinking about it at work, but the lady in Armour reminds me of Bodacea Now in verse 3 line 4 could the boat and the donkey/ass stand for boadacea? Also Foxgloves are a poisonous plant and can represent the heart or death depenant on their use, or am I going too deep and looking too hard again LOL

Thank you, but I was wrong ;D The front of a boat is a prow and its a donkey, so that makes it:- For foxgloves proud on ...... or thats what I think anyway Not sure how the key and the rest work in though

Well done! As far as I can see, it's now
"For foxgloves proud on key he comes nigh"
But I'm not sure it makes sense!

This is the worst!
Line 4 might be 'The steps .. .'
Line 5 is that a 'lad' -- giving 'glad' ?
