There isn't really a lot to buy in Sri Lanka, especially when it's a third trip and all the touristy type souvenirs are already gracing mantelpieces and shelves. Sri Lanka is however the source of the finest sapphires in the world, and since gold is also a lot cheaper there than here in the UK, jewellery is an exceptionally good buy. With this in mind, I'd been saving £2 coins for the past 4 years, with the aim of treating myself the next time I went there. I particularly wanted a ring as the one I'd worn since I was 21 had become so fragile, I'd been warned not to wear it except for special occasions or it would break irrepairably. The one I've bought was made for me in the design I liked the best, but with a bigger sapphire than the original. The "rough" gold has a matt finish, the smooth gold a shiny one And this is it on my finger. I also got myself a gold necklace. (The bracelet you can see in the second pic was bought in the Dubai duty free shop 4 years ago with 5p pieces I'd been saving for years and the camera that took the pics was bought thanks to 20p pieces that had mounted up!)

Looks great , Ann! It's definitely 'bling bling, the real thing!' I love the simple design.
Our first Siamese used to suffer from 'magpie syndrome' and stole anything shiny. I spent ages looking for my gold signet ring and cross and chain only to find it 2 1/2 months later, pushed carefully under the edge of the fitted carpet in the bedroom. She had quite a hoard up there! Our local newagent used to save up all the cheap bling that was given away free with teen mags especially for her....but she had an eye for the real thing!!
