I think we had a thread similar to this in the past, but I couldn't resist sharing some of my favourite place names we came across during our recent trip to the USA. There were sweet sounding names like Buttonwillow and Pleasanton; odd names like Eureka, Monolith and Modesto (so named because someone important was too modest to have the town named after him), and my personal favourite: Zzyzx.

This could be an interesting thread! We have some interesting place names round here, although in the main, not what you'd call pretty ones. The one that immediately springs to mind is Boghouses. I can't imagine having that as part of my address. I do rather like Sunniside though and one of these days I'm going to drive into Dragonville, just to see what it's like there. Another that always fascinates me whenever I see a sign for it is Glororum. It always makes me wonder if it's a survival from the Roman Occupation.
(I wonder if they sleep a lot in Zzyzx!)

Apart from Splott in Wales, Booze in Yorkshire and Twatt in the Orkneys, there's Paradise in Gloucester and World's End in Birmingham!!! Lesley T x

I remember a Spittle in Wales. We have Thong here in Kent. On a slightly different note, there used to be a curry house in Hackney called The Golden Stool. I have no idea if it's still there.

Roger Bannister has a street named for him somewhere in London, close to Iffley Road where he broke the four minute mile in 1954.

Watching tennis generates some very interesting musings on place names where the players were born:
Roger Federer: Basel, Switzerland Rafael Nadal: Manacor, Mallorca, Spain David Ferrer: Javea/Xabia, Spain Juan Carlos Ferrero: Onteniente/Onteniyent, Spain Juan Martin del Potro: Tandil, Argentina Andy Murray: Dunblaine, Scotland
I have noticed that the top players all seem to come from "S" countries: Novak Djokovic (Serbia), Roger Federer (Switzerland), Andy Murray (Scotland), David Ferrer and Rafael Nadal (Spain). The ninth ranked player, Janko Tipsarevic is also from Serbia. Of the top ten players, the S's reign supreme.

Interesting how things have changed over the years Edda. In the past, it was always the "A" countries, Australia and America!

Another interesting local name I've only just come across is Quaking Houses. It sounds like something out of "Cold Comfort Farm"!

I think Hen Poo is a lake near Berwick, Loose Bottom is in Sussex and Wormiehills is somewhere in Scotland!

Another thing I have noticed, in addition to place names, is the multiple occurrences of names belonging to people. Some variation of John is the most common. There are multiple Johns, Juans and Ivans in tennis.

Another name coincidence: Serbia has Janko Tipsarevic and Jelena Jankovic. Had Jelena maried Janko, she would have been Jelena Jankovic Tipsarevic. (Janko is married to a woman named Biljiana Sesevic).
