We booked the hotel fairly late, when I found an especially good deal online. It was well placed, just a couple of minutes walk from the centre and both our rooms overlooked the river. This was the Grazer Congress where the recital was held. The rooms inside were magnificent, although I can't speak for those of the Casino! The main tourist attraction was the Schlossberg at one end of the city. It was a hill that had originally had a castle on the top of it. Now it's more famous for the Clock Tower which you can see in this pic, along with the steps we climbed to get to it. This was the view from the top of the hill, with the snow capped mountains in the background. The Christmas Market was due to start a few days after we left, but on the Friday, a lot of the stalls had already opened for business. This one was selling artificial flowers and was the most colourful of the lot. We naturally had plenty of stops for "Kaffee und Kuchen" (Coffee and Cake) and we especially liked this cafe, which was in a small, sheltered courtyard behind the main street. Can you imagine a set up like that in the UK? The throws and blankets would all have vanished after the first week!!

i admit i have a lot of jealousy for such cities rich in history! canada can be so plain. beautiful buildings. and those stairs! did your legs hurt the next day? the view from the hill is stunning. ann looks quite comfortable on the chair with the blankets. those wouldn't last here either. did you buy anything from the christmas stalls?
