Just re-reading the What are you watching? thread. Ann, I was very young (LOL) when 'Round the Horne' was on, but we never missed it. Also 'Forces Favourites' Does anyone remember 'Educating Archie' with Archie Andrews and Peter Brough? Story time with Uncle Mac? Muffin the Mule? Pinky and Perky? When milk didn't come in tetrapacks or bottles (Well, we DID live in the country miles from anywhere). -If anyone knows where I can get a full sized milk churn, tell me! Wind up gramophones, 78 rpm records. No street lights. -When 'Tulips from Amsterdam' was top of the hit parade. Bakelite light switches. When you could actually AFFORD to 'let the train take the strain' Steam Trains! and petrol was 3s 11d a gallon and cigarettes 4s 6d for 20. Cigarette advertising on TV (You're never alone with a Strand) No Supermarkets, no parking meters... The days when sales had things you didn't think you might buy if they were half the price. Ah me! Wow, that takes me back!
Yes, I remember the steam trains. We used to come down to London on the Flying Scotsman in the summer to stay with my Mum's family (Londoners). It took 6 hours in those days. As it took me 7½ hours to get to Telford last week by train, there's no improvement there then!
We used to listen to "Forces Favourites" and "Two Way Family Favourites", followed by the "Billy Cotton Band Show".
I can also remember running home from school in time to see "Rag Tag and Bobtail", which was my favourite.
Those were the days before plastic bags. Remember those brown carrier bags with the string handles that always gave way before you were halfway home? And Eldorado icecream? And garages where someone filled the car with petrol for you?
I think what I remember most though, is the freedom we had as children. Being taken or collected by our parents from anywhere was absolutely mortifying!

'The Wooden Tops' 'Pogles Wood' 'The Herbs' 'Camberwick Green' 'Andy Pandy' 'Bill and Ben', which, for some reason absolutely terrified me.
...and the girl in the middle of the 'test card' on TV, who, I was absolutely convinced, was my older sister. My parents had a hard time trying to explain that she just had the same hairstyle.

There was a garage across the lane where the school bus used to stop. I went to another school in the opposite direction as my grandparents didn't think much of Upper Broughton school. I would catch the bus there and back, even in the dark. Now, I don't even like to go up to the Precinct in the dark and I'm much bigger! Do you remember farthings and 4 for a penny chews? When Woolworths sold loose sherbet? When there was only one tv channel?
