I was watching CNN around 2:00am and saw the sad news about the Queen Mother. I am so sorry to hear of her passing, she was truly one of the great ladies of the century.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Thanks Vicki. There aren't many of us who can remember a time when the Queen Mother wasn't there. She's been in the public eye since 1923 when she married the then Duke of York. Not having her around is going to take some getting used to.

Thank you all of you for your messages. I watched the funeral today. I was fine until the coffin was brought from the Abbey and the Irish Guard began to play a lament. Then I just howled, and I don't know why! I feel so sorry for the Queen. She's lost her sister and her mother within a few weeks. Linda

It was the Lancaster bomber and the two Spitfires doing the flypast that did it for me Linda. There's just something about those old planes and all the history they evoke.
One of the most moving and uplifting things for me was the poem printed on the Order of Service. I understand it was there by the Queen Mother's special request. No one knows who wrote it and it's caused some speculation. US members may not have seen it, so here it is:
You can shed tears that she is gone or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back or you can open your eyes and see all she's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she's gone or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back or you can do what she'd want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.
I think it could help many people suffering their own family bereavements.

Ann,
How beautiful those words are - thank you. I hadn't seen them but I will keep them. They certainly have a significance for my own circumstances.
