We've been on the Board for some time now, so this intro is somewhat overdue, but here goes. The People's Animal Welfare Service is based in Bedlington, Northumberland, and we TRY. The bulk of the details can be found at www.paws-uk.org so I'll not repeat everything here. Suffice it to say that we try to help people with high vet bills if they need it and, although we don't set out to do so, we also end up finding homes for quite a few animals as well. Sheila and I became involved when she took a stray cat ("I'm not paying full vet bills for someone else's pet!" ) to Mary Weightman's clinic about 5 years ago. Mary fed her a sob story about the volunteers all being too old (nobody much under 70) and asked if she could spare an hour a week. Within months, the hour per week had become a week per hour and Sheila had the keys to, and the running of, the whole shebang! Never volunteer! And the stray cat? He became our no.3 out of 5 - SixDinnerSid (see website picture) but that's another story.

I admire the work you and Sheila have undertaken, Graham. It must be difficult and at times heartbreaking, but also rewarding when you've been able to help an animal find that special home. I had a quick look at the website - that Mary looks quite a character!
By coincidence, we've booked a short-break holiday in Northumberland (Alnwick area) this coming weekend!

I'm glad you found time to do this post Graham. I can recommend a visit to the P.A.W.S website to everyone who reads it. Like Cat Register and Rescue in Falkirk, P.A.W.S. is a very small local charity. I have nothing but respect and admiration for the hard work that goes into raising the money needed for a small charity to keep operating. They can't rely on legacies, which are the backbone of most of the large charities and it's tough going. Donna, Alnwick is only an hour from Whitley Bay. Come and meet The Boys!

Thanks for the encouragement, Donna. Yes, upsetting, yes rewarding and yes, Mary is a character at 98 in June. We're all hoping for the Queen's telegram in a couple of years. Do enjoy your Northumberland weekend. I've had a weak end ever since I came here in 1974!

A hearty "4-Paws-up" to you and the work you do.....I have to admit, we don't see enough organizations like yours over here in the States...not that there's not some, and I would not think to belittle the work that they do, but it's been my perception that this type of "animal conscience" is much stronger in the UK, and I commend you for it....bravo...! Jen, Julie and I all went to a Race Night that P.A.W.S. organised last night. Not only was it great fun, but it raised some much needed money for the charity too. I'd heard of Race Nights, but this was the first time I'd ever actually been to one. I'd definitely recommend them, both as a means of fundraising and a good night out.

Visited the P.A.W.S website Graham and it's excellent. Bravo to you and Sheila for all the work you put in. Mary appears to be an absolutely amazing lady. Here's to the 100!

What a great charity -- it's so good to see people working to help animals and each other. Thanks for the information!
